We all appreciate it's an icon for a lot of people who know the story well. 'Everybody at the Guild wants to do this show justice: the board members, the entire cast and crew. 'A lot of people here lived through segregation and racism still exists,' Earman says. But the story is set against a backdrop of racism and segregation. 'Hairspray' is famous for its happy, upbeat energy and fabulous dance music. They're thrilled the Guild is producing it. 'It was awesome playing the villains Rooster and Lily together in ?Annie.' So far, Rogers and Earman have performed together in five Theatre Guild productions including 'Annie' and 'Oklahoma.' Both have played separate leading roles in Guild productions, too. I have the right physical appearance, vocal range, dancing ability and the right personality,' Rogers says. 'Everyone told me I was perfect to play Tracy.

The show's central character is Tracy Turnblad, a plump teenage girl who wants to dance on TV more than anything in the world. Set in 1962 Baltimore, 'Hairspray' features rock and roll singing and dancing a la American Bandstand, the popular '60s TV show with host Dick Clark. Dana Rogers remembers the first time she saw 'Hairspray' on Broadway in 2003.
