It also remade USA, launching a host of other quick-witted, sure-footed, quality “blue-sky” shows, including “White Collar,” “Royal Pains” and “Covert Affairs” that soon all but owned the summer.īut now the fall is upon us, and with it the end of “Burn Notice.” There is no denying the stress of seven seasons. Her love for Michael moved her, but it never overwhelmed her.Īdd to the mix a beer-swilling former Navy SEAL in a Hawaiian shirt (Bruce Campbell’s Sam Axe), a chain-smoking, hilariously narcissistic mother (Sharon Gless as Maddie) and, a few seasons in, a former nemesis turned buddy (Coby Bell’s Jesse) and you had a show that redefined family viewing. Tough and impetuous, she never dissolved into sentiment or self-doubt. Likewise, for several years, the “trigger-happy girlfriend” Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) was among the best female roles on TV. There he was forced to rely on his wits and a few other characters so dented and dinged that they weren’t afraid to hang out with a burned spy. USA was the network that “Monk” built when “Burn Notice” debuted in 2007, and though Matt Nix’s tale of kicked-to-the-curb spy Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) shared a few of “Monk’s” DNA markers - an emotionally burdened lead character with a specific set of super-skills and a surprising amount of humor - “Burn Notice” was something else again.įast paced, bullet-pocked and extremely clever, it took a classically handsome action hero who could talk/shoot/MacGyver his way out of anything and dumped him on the ash heap (in this case Miami).

If it’s this easy to blackmail a government agent, it’s a wonder they ever burn anybody.While television pundits work themselves into an honors-English lather deconstructing the minutiae of “Breaking Bad’s” final episodes, let us pause for a moment, crack a window and possibly a beer, and consider Thursday’s final episode of USA’s “Burn Notice,” a show that had profoundly altered the television landscape before Walter White was barely a mad gleam in Vince Gilligan’s eye. And wouldn’t you know it, Homeland Security’s finest comes through, and delivers Mike’s burn notice dossier. Suddenly, not so smug.īack at Michael’s loft, he and Fi have a spy’s version of ‘the big talk’, which mostly involves Fi kicking his ass, but they definitely make some progress. All Bly has to do to keep his job is provide Mike with his burn notice file. According to the ‘surveillance’ folder in Mike’s possession, he and Agent Bly are not only close friends, but ‘business’ associates, as evidenced by the $100,000 deposited into an account in Bly’s name by Michael, as well as the shell companies registered in both their names. At a meeting to discuss Mike’s new life as a bank security guard, Bly gets a nasty surprise.
Having gone an incredibly long way to set the guy up, Mike finally springs the trap.
The cash was part of the plan to get rid of the ever-popular Agent Bly. The large sum was only ever on loan, in Michael’s mind, and having served its purpose, the money goes back to its rightful owner. Michael return’s Ernie’s ten grand, less expenses, of course. Mike watches as a Westen-sanctioned explosion rips apart the gang leader, and her house. Amazing what a tiny amount of misinformation and an enormous gun can achieve.Īrmed with a Fi-built flash bomb, originally ‘intended’ for Ernie and his family, the gang’s lieutenant pays Concha a visit, before sneaking away.
Ernie is instructed to leave town as soon as possible, and when Mike and the gang’s number two arrive at the bodega to find it closed, they hatch a plan to get rid of Concha, and get the gang out of the neighbourhood. After a particularly hilarious psychotic display, Concha decides that Mike’s talents would be put to better use elsewhere, and she has just the job.Īpparently, the trio’s current client, Ernie, is a thorn in Concha’s side.She’s trying to force the locals out in order to buy up all the real estate, and Ernie is the cornerstone of the resistance. She informs him that, rather than just killing him, she wants Mike’s psycho persona to work for her, making collections in the neighbourhood he’s trying to save. Posing as a psychotic thief, complete with baseball bat and a rather fetching collection of loud shirts, he screams, threatens and smashes his way to an audience with Concha, the gang leader.
The gang uses the usual tactics of violence and intimidation to collect its protection money, so Westen decides to give them a taste of their own medicine.
